China and the Champions League

13 Mar

Many football fans will know the Champions League is going on in Europe now, with Barcelona showing they still can’t be written off by overwhelming AC Milan 4-0 yesterday (Tuesday) to move into the quarterfinals. However, Asia also has its Champions League. China has 4 teams in it – Guangzhou Evergrande, Beijing Guoan, Jiangsu Sainty, and Guizhou Renhe. It’s still early in the group stages and defending Chinese champions Guangzhou tied with Korean foes yesterday while Jiangsu Sainty earned their first ever point by drawing with Japanese opponents in Nanjing.  As Wild East China reports, it was a poignant moment for Jiangsu, playing in their first ever Asian Champions League tournament, and with the added significance of playing a Japanese team in Nanjing, site of the terrible massacre by Japanese troops in 1937. Guangzhou did well to get a draw in South Korea after going one goal down. Tonight Beijing and Guizhou play, hoping for wins to kickstart their campaigns.
